Where the delta meets the sea
Bakkhali is a village in the Namkhana block of South 24 Parganas. The whole district lies in the Ganges delta, and its southern part is a maze of channels and islands, among them Henry Island, Sagar Island and Fraserganj Island. The area belongs to the Sundarbans settlements.
Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal from 1903 to 1908, is credited with the 'discovery' of this coast, and neighbouring Fraserganj is named after him. Today the beach from Bakkhali to Fraserganj, about 8 km long, is one continuous seaside locality, and one of the most visited coastal spots in the district along with Gangasagar.
Fishing shapes daily life here. Fraserganj has a government-run fishing harbour, and the state fisheries corporation Benfish has a presence nearby. Offshore, forested islands such as Jambudwip and Lothian can be reached only by country boat, as they have no jetties.
