Fraserganj sits at the far end of the beach from Bakkhali, and the two now run together as one seaside area. The village takes its name from Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal from 1903 to 1908, who is credited with the 'discovery' of this coast.
Near the beach stands a ruined house that local people say Fraser used to stay in. Today it is a quiet, overgrown shell, worth a short stop for anyone curious about the area's colonial-era past.
The fishing harbour
Fraserganj has a government-run fishing harbour, and it is the working heart of the area. Trawlers come and go with the tides, nets are mended on deck, and the catch is sorted and sold on the quay. Early morning is the liveliest time.
- Ask before photographing people at work, and keep clear of loading and unloading.
- Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet; the quayside can be slippery.
- The harbour is a workplace. Activity, access and timings depend on the fishing season and tides.
Wind farm
A small wind energy farm near Fraserganj generates electricity, and its turbines are a familiar landmark on the drive along the coast.
