Henry's Island lies close to Bakkhali, around 130 km from Kolkata. It is the place to come for a quieter, greener side of the coast than the main beach.

The approach passes under a canopy of trees that forms a natural tunnel, and wooden walkways cross the creeks and mangroves. A watchtower gives a view over the forest and the sea. On the beach, red crabs dart across the wet sand and vanish into their burrows as you come near.

Visiting tips

  • Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and more crab activity on the sand.
  • Walk slowly near the waterline: the crabs disappear at the first vibration.
  • Carry water and mosquito repellent, and wear shoes you can walk in on sand and mud.
  • Entry arrangements, fees and opening hours can change. Check locally before you go.

Please leave the crabs and mangroves undisturbed and take all litter back with you.
