Two days is enough to see Bakkhali at an easy pace. This sample plan assumes you drive from Kolkata and stay one night. Adjust the timings to the tide, the weather and opening hours on the day.

Day 1: arrive and unwind

  • Leave Kolkata early to beat the traffic on NH 12.
  • Cross the Hatania Doania Bridge at Namkhana and continue to Bakkhali.
  • Check in, have lunch and rest through the hottest part of the day.
  • Walk the beach in the late afternoon and stay for the evening light.

Day 2: island, harbour and home

  • Head to Henry's Island in the morning for the tree tunnel, watchtower and red crabs.
  • Visit the Fraserganj fishing harbour and the ruins of Sir Andrew Fraser's house.
  • If the sea is calm and boats are running, consider a trip around Jambudwip. Landing is not allowed.
  • After lunch, start back to Kolkata before dark.

What to pack

  • Cash, water and snacks.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and mosquito repellent.
  • Shoes for sand and mud, and a change of clothes.
  • A light jacket in winter for the evening breeze.
